Eliakim
Biblical character, son of Hilkiah
Eliakim son of Hilkiah was a high official in King Hezekiah's court who represented Judah during the Assyrian crisis.
Biography
Isaiah and 2 Kings identify Eliakim son of Hilkiah as being over Hezekiah's household. Isaiah 22 announces that he would replace the unfaithful Shebna and describes him as receiving authority symbolized by the key of the house of David. During Sennacherib's invasion, Eliakim joined Shebna and Joah in meeting the Assyrian field commander, hearing his threats against Jerusalem, and reporting them to Hezekiah with torn clothes. He later participated in communication with Isaiah as the king sought God's help.
Biblical Significance
Eliakim is an important faithful official during Hezekiah's confrontation with Assyria. Isaiah's imagery of the key of David later contributes language used in Revelation 3:7.
