SHERGHAT, ASSHUR, ASSUR
Sherghat, ancient Asshur or Assur, was the first capital and chief religious center of Assyria on the Tigris River. The city gave its name to Assyria and was associated with the national god Assur.
Biblical Usage
Asshur is connected with the biblical table of nations and with the rise of Assyria. The city’s religious importance continued even after political capitals moved to Calah, Dur-Sharrukin, and Nineveh.
