SEA, THE GREAT
The Great Sea is the Mediterranean Sea, forming the western boundary of the biblical land of Israel. It was also called the western or hinder sea and figured prominently in biblical geography and imagery.
Biblical Usage
The Great Sea marks territorial boundaries and supplies biblical geographical imagery. It is associated with western direction, the coastlands, ships, storms, and the sea’s disappearance in the vision of the new earth. Biblical accounts also connect it with Joppa, voyages, the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and Paul’s shipwrecks.
