Saul
Saul was the first king of Israel, chosen and anointed through Samuel. Though initially successful against Israel’s enemies, his disobedience and jealousy led to his rejection; he died in battle against the Philistines.
Biblical Usage
Saul’s election and reign mark Israel’s transition to monarchy. God’s Spirit came upon him at his calling, but his failure to obey Samuel’s commands led to his deposition. His jealousy of David brought repeated attempts on David’s life and contributed to his tragic fall.
