Leummim
The Leummim were a North Arabian tribe descended from Dedan. Their name means “peoples” or “nations,” and they are listed with the Asshurim and Letushim.
Definition
A Libertine was a freed slave or the descendant of a freed slave. In Acts, the term probably refers to descendants of Jews who had been taken captive, enslaved, and later liberated.
Biblical Usage
The Libertines belonged to a synagogue in Jerusalem and disputed with Stephen before his martyrdom, together with Jews from Cyrene, Alexandria, Cilicia, and Asia.
Historical Background
Jews taken to Rome by Pompey and other Roman generals were later emancipated. After Jews were banished from Rome in A.D. 19, many apparently went to Jerusalem and established a synagogue.
