In older English Bible usage, “sides” can refer to the flank, thigh, or inner parts. In Jonah 1:5, later translations render the expression as the innermost parts of the ship.

A signet was a seal, commonly set in a ring, used to authenticate documents or commands. Its impression served as an official mark of authority.

Sihon was king of the Amorites east of the Jordan. He refused Israel passage, attacked them, and was defeated, after which Israel took his territory.

Silence may mean literal quietness or the interruption of speech. Scripture also uses it figuratively for unanswered prayer, reverent awe before God, or the stillness associated with death.

Silk was a valuable textile known especially in New Testament commerce. Revelation lists it among the luxury goods of Babylon, while some Old Testament translations use “silk” where fine linen is intended.

Siloam was a pool and watercourse near Jerusalem, supplied by a subterranean channel from the Virgin’s Fountain. Its gently flowing waters are mentioned in Isaiah, and Jesus sent a blind man there to wash and receive sight.

The Pool of Siloam was a reservoir southeast of Jerusalem, receiving water through a long underground channel. Jesus sent the man born blind to wash there, and he returned seeing.

The Tower of Siloam was a tower near Jerusalem that fell and killed eighteen people. Jesus referred to its collapse while teaching that those who suffered were not necessarily greater sinners than others.
